Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date

The anticipation about this year's gaming ceremony was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction hints that the team is likely designing a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
